For the past 3 weeks I have gone round in circles with my site https://www.ambitusfoundation.org. First I installed Sucuri monitoring and added their htaccess file and put it on the “server side”. It immediately gave me 503 errors, or so it seemed.
Sucuri advised me to whitelist their IPs but my host declined to do this, and then suggested I get VPS (WHM + cpanel) and do it myself. Then Sucuri said the 503s had nothing to do with the firewall, suggested checking my error logs on the server.
I have no idea what to look for and my host says there is no customer support for VPS, so I am now completely on my own. The site is unusable and visitors get the error message “Service Unavailable: The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.”
    Going round in circles.
This is what I have done so far: replaced the htaccess file. Changed the login url to /wplogin. Nothing has worked.
This is killing the business, and I don’t know where to turn. Not a tech, don’t know how to make changes on the server or interpret error logs.
Running WP 4.4. Plugins: (amongst others) Backup Buddy, iThemes Security Pro

Do the 503s go away when you deactivate Sucuri’s plugin?

Hi James – Unfortunately no. I took Sucuri off and things did seem to be better but now they are back to how they were.

Try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via FTP or SFTP, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

Hi James – That was excellent advice. The source of the issue was the translation widget WPML. I suspect there is a clash with the Genesis framework. I will have to use something else… Many thanks for your help.
