What is the recomended timeouts to get avoid HTTP 504 gateway timeout?

    As wordpress upgrade process is synchronous operation, at upgrading to WordPress 4.4 I’ve get

    HTTP 504 gateway timeout

    So what is the recommended timeouts for web server and PHP/CGI processes to avoid this issue.

    Unlimited is not an option anyway.

    Is there plans to implement upgrade as async process?
