    Dear fellow WP users,

I’ve had a reader contact me due to a broken RSS feed. At first, I troubleshooted some issues with caching which seemed to be an obvious issue, but then I realized it was something else.

My feed is at https://goughlui.com/feed and at the moment, it doesn’t pass validation because I have a posting where I use Preformatted Text in my posting for monospaced text.

As a result, the feed itself has a
< p r e > tag in it which trips up parsing in Firefox, IE amongst others. I tried to hide this by burying the Preformatted Text under a “read more” break, but it doesn’t stop it from coming up on the RSS feed itself.

How can I stop this from happening? Do I have to avoid using Preformatted Text altogether?

    Thanks,
    Gough.

I see what you mean: https://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fgoughlui.com%2Ffeed%2F

    With the problem in https://goughlui.com/2015/11/26/analysis-freeview-sydney-launch-of-9life-dsm-cc-etc/

<pre> shouldn’t be a problem, so I suspect something with the characters themselves, or placement.

Try starting on a different line, like:

    <pre>
    4330000131023
    UEP(ZIN600040)
    UEP(HMX260000)
    UEP(LGW005001)
    UEP(PMSMTV401)
    UEP(CSMHMA102)
    UEP(SNYLCD032)
    UEP(BWZFVM001)
    UEP(LGW015001)
    UEP(LGW101001)
    UEP(LGW205001)
    UEP(LGW305001)
    UEP(LGW405001)
    UEP(FVATST001)
    UEP(ZIN600050)
    UEP(SAMMDLE4N)
    UEP(SAMMDLE4)
    UEP(SAMMDLE7)
    UEP(SAMMDLE5)
    UEP(SAMMDLF7DB)
    UEP(SAMMDLF7)
    UEP(SAMMDLF6)
    UEP(SAMMDLFX4)
    UEP(SAMMDLFN4)
    DSM://exclude/a1100000R1000CdefN100Papp01/epg/104/epg/APNCRLapp01
    DSM://p/a
    </pre>

If that doesn’t work, re-type 4330000131023, as there could be a hidden invalid character there.

    Thanks James,

It was indeed several occurrences of two different non-printing control characters which snuck into the data. Once I removed them, the feed validated correctly.

    Your help was much appreciated!
