Erased first site

    Hi all…

    Please excuse my ignorance; very new to wordpress and webmaster stuff… I think I may have screwed everything up, but still have hope that one of you amazing people will be able to help me!

    Here’s what happened:

    I had/have a website (blog) called https://www.DTs2Cents.com. I started this site to ‘learn’ the basics of wordpress. Now that I have a general understanding of SEO and basic wordpress site maintenance, I wanted to start another site for my actual business. I called bluehost and asked if I would be able to install and host this other site via wordpress, with them, without messing everything up. They assured me things would be fine…

    So today I went into BlueHost and clicked the ‘install wordpress’ link…..then went through the motions… When it was done installing the “new wordpress”, EVERYTHING was gone from my old site (from a user and/or administrative perspective)… My wp-admin log on would take me to the new wordpress ‘stuff’ that was installed. Even the old url was now replaced by the “coming soon” wordpress advertisement for people with new wordpress sites.

    Here’s exactly what I mean:
    Before today’s ‘install’, my wordpress log on would take me to my “old site.”
    Now, the EXACT SAME LOG ON takes me to the new wordpress site…that’s obviously not built yet… I literally have no access to my old site via wordpress… The dashboard I get (within wordpress), using the old logon information, takes me to the new wordpress site… I hope I’m illustrating this adequately….

    I’m assuming it has something to do with an overwrite; and yet I’m really hoping this isn’t the case… Did I overwrite my old wordpress site with a new blank template??!

    In any case, I freaked out not having any access to the old wordpress admin area (or site), so I ‘uninstalled’ the most recent version. In my “installs” area of the mojo market place, it showed both sites… I uninstalled the new site, but left the old — hoping that everything would return to normal… No luck, lol…

    I know….I’m an idiot…..

    Anyways, it’s all gone (the old site and admin logon ability)….from the user side (and admin side) of wordpress that is. I’m assuming (HOPING) that my old site is still in my BlueHost database or files somewhere, but this is where I begin to spiral out of control… Again – I’m very new to this, so even if I were able to find the old site’s files, I wouldn’t know what to do….

    Anybody care to offer advice? When all is said and done (whether, or not, I’m able to bring back the old site), is my original goal even possible? Having two wordpress sites simultaneously? I presume it should be, as I would think that some of you maintain multiple sites for your clients under one umbrella….

    Please help…. Anyone… Your time is greatly appreciated!

    ps… If you go to my old/original wordpress site, you’ll get an advertisement from BlueHost. If you add the wp-admin to the end of the site (where I would normally sign in), you get a 404 redirect….

    Hope that somehow helps…

    Anybody?

    I have been trying to figure this out for hours now, lol! I need help!

    I have managed to clear my browser cache, and uninstall the 2nd version of wordpress… Now I can get to the ‘set-up’ guide for wordpress (as though I’m a first time user)…. I’m asked to enter the following:

    Database username
    Database password
    Database host
    Table prefix (if you want to run more than one WordPress in a single database)

    After I enter the info from ‘my SQL’ database (in bluehost), this is the message I get:

    Error establishing a database connection
    This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

    Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
    Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
    Are you sure that the database server is running?

    Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance….

    ps… I’ve also gone into ‘php my admin’ (within bluehost) and viewed the specific data tables/database I want wordpress to use. Everything is still there; from my previously working/functional wordpress site (comments, posts, users, etc..)…. As such -I assume (hope!) that there’s just a communication error between wordpress and bluehost…

    Hopefully I’m giving you guys/gals enough info. for proper guidance (mentorship)!

    Update:

    I’ve been able to get into the admin part of my wordpress site now…, but it’s still not right…

    I did this by installing a new wordpress site, and using the info from a previously backed-up wp-config.php file within the file management area of my bluehost account (I entered the database name/password/host/prefix from a backed up version I found within the file management area of my cpanel).

    This created a brand new wp-config file within the file management area (within my bluehost cpanel).

    As a result, all the posts I’ve made on the blog, the pages, and all comments are now viewable within the admin area. HOWEVER, none of my plugins are present….and the site is NOT viewable by typing in the url, nor by clicking the “view site” link within the admin/dashboard area…

    Thus, there is still something wrong. What I did is obviously a work-around, which was probably NOT the best way to go about doing anything… I’m hoping that while I’ve learned quite a bit from trial & error, that I didn’t screw everything up in the process!!!

    Anyways, I’m still open to suggestions. I plan on calling bluehost tomorrow if I can’t get this resolved, but I figure you all would be the best source for my woes…

    Not to be rude or nothing, but have you submitted a support ticket with your host company as well? They might be able to help point you where your backups are stored (hopefully). This may or not help https://smallbusiness.chron.com/restore-wordpress-onto-bluehost-62915.html

    No offense taken. To be honest with you, they’re sorta the reason I’m in this situation to begin with, lol… Remember; I called them and was assured that the process of installing another wordpress site was just as simple as the first. “Just click on the link and it’ll guide you” is what they said… So I did… And then I had two urls pointing to the same site. To make it even worse, my old wordpress logon information would do the same…it would literally take me to the new site (both logons would take me to the admin panel of my new site)…

    Thus my reason for posting for help on these forums. I was under the impression that I had replaced my old site data with the new; and “overwrite” of sorts… After hours of digging for answers though, I began to learn more about databases and such, and am a bit more confident at this point that there was just an issue with how wordpress was being ‘told’ (by me; accidentally) to extract files…

    With that said.. I do plan on contacting them today hoping that they can help. I’m sure they’ll know where the backups are (if they exist), but I’m not confident that they’ll be able to help me get the wordpress side of things worked out…

    Anyways, thanks for the feedback… I’ll check out the link you provided now… Thanks again…
