When I edit a gallery, or bring in images from the media library, the edit window shows the thumbs distorted.

In media library the thumbs are square and the image is cropped to fit.

When the images come into the foogallery editing page the square format is retained but the image now distorts to fit it.

Is there a way to sort this?

It could be from your default thumb size set in your settings -> media

What is your default thumb dimensions?

Also, is this only in the admin, or are the thumbs generated in the frontend also giving you problems?

Just in the admin. Frontend is fine. Media thumbs size settings can have nothing to do with it surely? Default settings are 125×125, but that is “…maximum dimensions in pixels to use when adding an image to the Media Library”.
Also as I said, the appearance of thumbs in the media library is normal, though cropped to a square.

Default thumb dimenstions are 150×150, so that is why they look stretched, as the thumbs in the gallery edit page are 150×150 and your thumbs are 125×125.

I could look at the thumb dimensions and use those. I will add this to our backlog

The size settings of thumbs in media gallery could be anything, depending on the user. You need to find a way to accommodate any size setting in media.

Also the stretching appears to be more significant than the difference between 125 and 150

To be clearer the stretching is the rectangular format of the image being squeezed/stretched into a square
