I’m using Genesis2.2.2 with the Magazine Pro theme. I’ve been using the Genesis Simple Share plugin to embed share buttons at the top of my post pages.

I’ve had no problems at all for several months, but the past few days my posts have not been completely loading for several minutes. I noticed that the Twitter share button is not displaying and I see a message in the browser status bar saying it’s connecting to a twitter API URL. I for get the exact URL but it was something like cdn.api.twitter.

So I went into the Genesis Simple Share configuration and disabled the Twitter share button and the problem disappeared and my pages are now loading just as fast as they used to.

Anyone else seen this problem? Are the authors aware? Is there a fix on the way?

  • Thanks for reporting this!

The plugin developers are aware of this issue and have a fix in the pipeline. I can’t yet share a release date for the update, so for now disabling the twitter badge is the best option.

Twitter are ending support for retrieving share counts, which is the underlying cause of this error. They said they’d remove their special share count URLs in October, but it looks like they’ve taken the API endpoints down a little early!

The next version of the plugin will resolve this issue; twitter badges will no longer display counts, but will otherwise function as normal.

Sorry for the inconvenience with this, and I hope that helps to clarify things.

    Nick,

Thanks for the update. Yes, that helps. I can just leave twitter shares disabled until the next update of the plugin.

Bummer about not being able to retrieve share counts, but as long as the basic share function is available, that will be fine.

The Genesis Simple share is by far the best-looking and most efficient, in terms of screen real-estate, that I’ve found so I want to stick with the plugin.

    Thanks
    Calvin

Thanks for the update and for the kind words about the plugin, Calvin – we appreciate your support!

Geez… the share counts are an important part of our site, it’s a selling point. Ours are still working but I just saw the update push explaining that the Twitter button was being eliminated “for now”… I’m hesitating to update and lose the Twitter button.

Is there any hope of getting this fixed or worked around?

Roll back to version 1.03 of Genesis Simple share. Had this problem too. Version 1.04 stopped the twitter count. And just wait for a better update of the plugin. Cheers!

    Thanks… I haven’t updated to 1.04 anyway… good thing. Let’s hope.

@jeffrey @nielsverwaal Version 1.0.4 does not remove the twitter button altogether – it just removes the count from the button.

Version 1.0.3 may work for a short time, but twitter counts will likely cease to display as twitter completes its shut down of the service that developers have been using to retrieve tweet counts.

This change is not something that version 1.0.4 has imposed – it’s due to twitter preventing developers from retrieving counts directly. The plugin had to be updated as a result of this or the buttons could fail to render correctly.

If twitter offer a fast, simple, public, documented alternative to retrieve counts, it’s possible the plugin will change to display them. Twitter haven’t done that yet, though, unfortunately.

I’m just as sad about them removing the count as you both are, but at this time the best option is to update to 1.0.4 – other networks still provide a count, and the plugin will continue to display those alongside the twitter button.

Do you think this has something to do with Gnip? I’ve heard this mentioned… and discovered they’re owned by Twitter.

@jeffrey Could be, but it’s hard to say for sure. It seems like it’s more to do with the redesign and relaunch of their new share buttons, which will no longer display share counts either. (They were using a special URI to retrieve counts for their native share buttons, and this is the URI that’s now being discontinued.)

For the record, I installed 1.04 and the twitter button still does not load at all and the page load never ends. I had to disable the twitter share button in order for my post pages to finish loading.

@cspowers Did you clear your browser cache and all caching plugins after updating the plugin? It sounds as though your site may have still been attempting to fetch the twitter count, which shouldn’t happen with the new version if all caches are cleared.

Nick, You were right. W/ 1.04 the twitter button is back and it loads very fast. It’s a solid button w/ no counts, which is what I’d expect. Disappointing to not have the counts, but I still think Genesis Sinple Share has both the most space efficient and good looking share buttons.
    Thanks
    Calvin

Thanks for the update, cspowers – that’s good to hear!

I’m sad about the missing tweet counts too. No promises, but I’ll keep an eye on things to see if there’s anything that could be done to restore the count in the future.

Hey Nick… My 1.03 is still working with the counts but I’m watching to see if it blows up. Will probably update soon. If there’s any new developments maybe you can post something here so we get notified. Thanks. Jeff

    hi guys,

we launched a fix for that on twitcount.com last week and we could integrate it with the plugin.

    + it offer sharing statistics
