I downloaded the WP FFWA Basic plug-in because I want users to be able to post stories, including chaptered stories, on my site and for it all to be easily searchable. This seemed the best (only?) plug-in for that. Unfortunately, its appearance is terrible, and I don’t have the knowledge/skills to fix it.

I am using the Kleo theme.

    The problems:

Stories only appear if I have my default page set to full width (which is fine because that’s what I had anyway). Otherwise all it shows is a black page.
All the text is smushed against the left side of the page.
The sidebar on my site (which shouldn’t appear on default full width pages) is smushed against the right side of the story text, and the story text splits the sidebar so part of the sidebar is beside the story text and part is below.*
*I can make it so the sidebar is all below the story text, smushed against the left. (see what I’ve tried)
If I remove the sidebar entirely (which is not feasible because I want/need it on a certain page), a story won’t show up at all and just shows a black screen.

I read the installation instructions for the plugin and changed the CSS code stuff as instructed. I also read this topic and played around with changing the alignment from left to right and changing the percentage number.

    What I’ve tried/results

No change just from doing the edit suggested in the installation instructions.
If I change the percentage as suggested in that other topic, I can make the whole sidebar appear below the story text, smushed against the left, of course.
Changing the alignments around like suggested in that topic just changed the text-smushing problem to the right side instead of the left. Setting it to “center” or “middle” makes no change.
I attempted using the jonradio Multiple Themes plugin hoping that one of the basic themes might display the stories better. It’s not ideal, and again, there are sidebar issues. Even just setting the theme everywhere to one of the basic ones (the default ones WordPress came with) didn’t really solve the display/text-smushing issues.

    What I want

The sidebar on the stories page gone.
The text of the stories not smushed against the edge of the page.
A way to organize and search stories by category and/or author. If this plugin isn’t the way to go, what else can I use? I don’t want users creating a bunch of blogs if I can avoid it.
If the issue is with Kleo, what is a good free theme that works well with this plugin?

Am I missing some sort of padding settings I could change? I have played around with various spots in the CSS box that say padding, but it doesn’t make a difference to the story page.

Here are a couple of screenshots showing what I’m talking about.

https://tinypic.com/r/n15u6e/8 (This doesn’t really do justice to the left-side-text-smushing issue…That black box at the edge of the image would be where the edge of the screen/monitor is.)

https://tinypic.com/r/v4v1g4/8 The black screen that results from not having a sidebar set on the site at all or from changing the theme’s default layout away from full width.

I have no prior CSS/web-building experience, so I still have a lot to learn. Please be patient with me.

To elaborate for anyone else who may have this problem:

I am using the “jonradio multiple themes” plugin to allow a secondary theme to display the stories because this plugin is NOT compatible with Kleo. I had to do quite some looking to find a free theme that was both compatible and that worked well with my content/sidebars/etc. If I can find something better, I still may change it. I haven’t found a theme yet that both has two menus and will allow navigation to multiple pages of the stories (suggestions welcome if anyone knows of one!).

There are other issues which are not yet resolved, but I am hopeful.

Support has been pretty good/helpful overall.
