• I’m having problems with plugin Updates. When I attempt the easy one-click update I get this message: Download failed. error:0D0890A1:asn1 encoding routines:ASN1_verify:unknown message digest algorithm I receive this message with every plugin I try to update.

When I try to install a new plugin I get this message: Download failed. error:0D0890A1:asn1 encoding routines:ASN1_verify:unknown message digest algorithm

I’m running WordPress 4.0 and have never had this problem before. What’s up? Can I do anything to make this problem go away?

  • I think it’s possible that the error may point to an issue with an outdated version of OpenSSL being used on the server.

Thanks Clayton but I wish I knew what this means; I’m not a tech person and know nothing about programming, coding, etc. Is there anything I can do to correct this issue with the version of OpenSSL or do I just have to live with it? I hope tis not the latter.

It’s something that’s not likely to be within your control. (Unless you control the server) Contact your hosts support group and give them a copy of the error message. They should be able to provide some insight.

I was afraid you’d say something like this. Yahoo is my host and although I cannot complain too much about them they’re not terribly helpful. Perhaps I’ll get lucky in a support group forum. Thanks.

BTW I’m leaving this thread open just in case other folk have suggestions or info.

Just installed a new blog and immediately tried to update it. Getting error message:
Download failed.: error setting certificate verify locations: CAfile: /usr/local/share/certs/ca-root-nss.crt CApath: none

    Any ideas?

@griehund Since you’re not getting the same error message, you should start your own thread so that it can be handled separately.

@ahighcrest This is a known issue with Yahoo hosting. The problem seems to be on their servers. More disgruntled users with the same error, and a temporary workaround, can be found here:

Otto, I followed the link that you provided then popped over to Yahoo and checked their status and sure enough, they acknowledged the problem and, of course, they’re working on it. The widget updates that apply to my blog are not crucial so I’ll wait it out and see what Yahoo does. Thanks guys for your help and information. I think I can mark this topic as resolved.
