Totally confused…Is my blog .com or .org

  • I recently started a wordpress.com site and then signed up to have it self hosted. The website provider had auto transfer feature, so I used that. The dashboard I use still says .com. First question, has my site been self hosted or not? Second, the wordpress install I keep reading about, should only apply to installing it onto my online host account, correct. Since my provider transferred it for me, isn’t it already installed? Thanks.

  • Paste your URL into this search and take a look at its Registrar and nameservers:
    https://www.whois.com/whois/

    If you have purchased a domain name, it can be registered wherever it is registered and then pointed to any nameservers of your choosing. If you purchased a domain name at wordpress.com and have since opened an account at a different host, you will have to go to your wordpress.com Dashboard to re-point that domain to your self-hosting nameservers…and then at that point (after waiting a little while for DNS propagation) you will be able to log in at your self-hosted site’s URL that is completely separate from anything related to wordpress.com. In the meantime, however, you might ask your host about a temporary URL to access your self-hosted site prior to re-pointing your domain name.

    Since my provider transferred it for me, isn’t it already installed?

    If you try go to your self-hosted URL and still land at the wordpress.com site, see above and/or ask your host why it is not working.

    It’s WordPress.com. You can usually tell by the little notice at the bottom of the page

    If you visit your site and look at the HTML code then you’ll see this.

    <meta name="generator" content="WordPress 4.3" />

    That means you are running a self-hosted WordPress site and you are not using WordPress.COM.

    If you were using WordPress.COM then you’d see this in the HTML code.

    <meta name="generator" content="WordPress.com" />

    Okay, guys, so how do we have a registered domain pointed at wordpress.com nameservers displaying content from SiteGround?!

    Where the domain is registered isn’t as important as where the WordPress installation is hosted.

    In this case the domain is using WordPress.COM as a registrar.

    The actual WordPress installation is hosted on Siteground.

    Which means it’s a self-hosted site.

    If it’s self hosted, should I be able to use plug ins? When I go to my wordpress admin there is no plug in option.

    @jan: The domain is still point at wordpress.com nameservers:

    Right, which as the registrar is perfectly fine and acceptable. WordPress.COM domain registrants don’t need to point to WordPress.COM servers. That does happen.

    In this case the domain A record points to a Siteground server.

    Which means it’s been transferred since I last looked.

    It might take me a while to understand what Jan has explained, but just be certain to go to your domain and *not* to your wordpress.com login.
