Hey, this is not only my first post on www.remarpro.com but my first post on a community page like this. Am from Nigeria, and am looking to develop an art site like deviant art that users can register, upload galleries, like and comment on people and posts and all that stuff. I have minimal php, css, html and other coding skills.

How can i acheive this kind of site, which themes and plugins would i need. Urgently need an answer, thanks

  • Wooooaaaa dude, this isn’t something you could just whip up with minimal knowledge of php, html and css.

Well am in the process of learning them, but if I can’t achieve it with WordPress is there other frameworks I can use?

It can be achieved with WordPress, but what you’re asking is a very big sort of system. ??

I believe what Khadesa was trying to say is that there’s a very high chance that you’ll have to do a fair bit of custom coding as well as styling yourself.

As far as plugins, just break the problem down into parts. As a first high-level problem, you need to maange users, so look for a user management plugin. After that you’ll need to be able to upload galleries, so look for a plugin for that. Keep going with that sort of thing until you find everything that you need. Just be aware that some plugins might not paly quite so nicely with each other, you may need to try a few plugins for the same functionality to find one that works for you and your desired system, and if all else fails you’ll need to roll up your sleeves and start writing your own code to do the job that you want.

Thanks catacaustic and Khadesa, that’s what I have been trying, but am looking for particular themes that I can use to reduce the amount of plugins I have to install.

I am concerned that using all the separate elements may lead to complex issues, far into the project that would be very hard to troubleshoot.

Themes are for the look of the site, plugins are for functionality (well, most times at least).

Any system like that will be complex no matter what you do, and debugging could always be an issue. That’s part of running a site of that level. If you want to know how everything works and be sure that there will be a minimum of debugging and conflicts, then the only option is to write everything for yourself. Unless you do that you will always be dealing with 3rd part code that might or might not change.

To be honest, any possible de-bugigng that you’d need to do would be nothing compared to customer support requests, so I think that there’s bigger things to be worried about then that.

Hmm thanks, well seems there is no easy way around it, I will keep this thread open so I can ask questions and troubleshoot as I develop

That’s not really how these forums work. This is a forum and not your blog. ??

If you have a specific question or need help then please start a new topic. Please don’t just keep this one open and continue to add to it.
