• Hi there

When upgrading themes/plugins, this is what you see on the update page:

The update process is starting. This process may take a while on some hosts, so please be patient.

    Enabling Maintenance mode…
    Updating Plugin Wordfence Security (1/3)

Wordfence Security updated successfully. Show Details
    Updating Plugin WordPress SEO (2/3)

WordPress SEO updated successfully. Show Details

On one particular server hosted with a particular host, I noted it does not report this type of progress.

An example, for example to update the WP SEO plugin (in German) just shows:

Der Updateprozess beginnt. Dies kann eine Weile dauern, hab’ bitte etwas Geduld.
Aktualisiere Plugin Yoast SEO (1 von 1)

and that is all. This is just the declaration the update of that plugin is beginning, nothing more, and you have to guess the updates are through & re-load the page.

The updates take place, but there is NO report of the progress & the message at the bottom that the process is finished.

Since I could not identify what was causing this, I decided to make a clean installation of WP & deliberately added only 2 plugins, one being an old WP SEO plugi version.

When it came to updatin this, same issue, also with a third party theme & twentythirteen.

So I guess the issue is not with any defective WP component, but exactly what could the cause be? If it is server-side, what exactly does WP need for this function?

This site is in a subfolder & on this plan. The root folder is occupied by a Drupal-based site, which runs smoothly. I also run another complex Drupal site, different plan, same host, no issues.

    Regards

So what could be causing the problem, if it comes up even with a fresh installation, just 2 plugins installed, one of them being the deliberately old SEO plugin, to test the update function?

A rather complex Drupal site under same hosting package/account has no noticed problems.

Well, may be this might be of some use to someone.
After wrestling with the Webhost, trying to convince them the issue must be coming from some server configuration, since none of the many WordPress sites hosted elsewhere that I do has ever had such … they agreed to look into it.

Then then said it must be caused by the php configuration of “zlib.output_compression” and suggested creating a php.ini file with the code
    zlib.output_compression = off
… and placing it in the wp-admin folder.

That solved the problem & should work as long as the webhost accepts custom php.ini files.
