• Good evening all. Over the weekend, it took me a few tries to upgrade my test blog to make sure I didn’t screw things up when I go to upgrade my real blog. The time has come . . . *choke* . . . to do the real upgrade.

    Questions:

    1) How hard is it to restore the back-up file if I mess up?
    2) Are all the posts/comments on the blog kept inside the wp-content folder (since the instructions say not to touch that folder)?
    3) Who is going to give me a valium? (hahaha)

Any tips from experienced “upgraders” that can be shared with me (and probably others who are as anxious as I) which aren’t mentioned on the upgrade instructions page?

I wish Yahoo would do the upgrade, but they don’t seem to be interested.

    Thanks folks.

  • 1. Files… that’s a piece of cake, and except your customized theme you shouldn’t ever worry about them They are absolutely replaceable.

There is noting in the files (except the “engine”). All the content (posts, Pages, comments, settings) are stored in the database! So, worry about the database, not the files!

    2. It’s only
    a) your theme(s)
    b) plugins you installed
    c) your images (if you uploaded them via WP), in the wp-content/uploads folder

    3. Yahoo should!

So, how did you do the “test upgrade” – e.g. when it says:
    1. Back up your database! > source

Oh, and if it is about wishes, I wish that Y! wouldn’t be in WP hosting business… ??

hahaha . . . hello again, moshu. Bailing me out again? ??

I installed and ran the Back-up plugin (version 1.7), and saved the back-up in my e-mail. As far as experimenting with the upgrade, I started a second blog under Yahoo, downloaded WP 2.3, and followed the instructions (the ones you linked) to upgrade the site. Not too sure what I was doing, but it took a few tries to resolve the errors I made (accidentally deleting some files, uploading WP 2.3 into a subdirectory by accident, etc).

Just the paranoia aspect of possibly losing 9 months of work gets to you after a while. ??

    Moshu,

    I did it! ??

It did take me a few tries to get all of the new files uploaded onto the site, but that was more due to my FTP/ISP timing out than anything else. Now that it’s upgraded, I’m able to use the new theme that I wanted.

Thanks again for all your help!
