Yoast plugin does not see other languages (XML Sitemap)

We were told that only the main language goes to the XML. Other languages Google sees via the hreflang meta.

If you have a reference showing differently, please let us know.

I have both WP Globus and Yoast’s sitemap tool active. After submitting the sitemap to Google’s Search Console it accepts the main language sitemap but in its ‘International targeting’ tab it further reports “Your site has no hreflang tags.”

Google also suggests showing the alternate languages in the XML sitemap https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/2620865?vid=1-635810217594181938-2107956374 but I don’t see any sign of those in the sitemap generated by Yoast.

I see in the HTML source:

Those are the hreflang tags.

Yes I can see them too. I wonder why Google Search Console doesn’t seem to see them.

3-4 years ago I was jumping and screaming each time I saw a message from Google. Today I hardly look at what they write. Most of time it’s irrelevant to your position in search results.
