Custom Post Type: Functions.php to Plugin?

I can’t find this anywhere…. I decided I want to put my custom post type that I already declared in the functions.php into a plugin instead (I failed – should have done this in the first place). Will this alter the custom posts that I created already? And will it link properly once I do this? I should mention that the site I am building is close to complete.
