    Hi,

I am doing a website for a local sports club. They have a mixture of events, only some of which require tickets. This will eventually replace their current (non-responsive) website.

Their current site displays upcoming events on the home page, and so I’d like to include the same feature in the new site.

To make managing the site easier for them, all ‘articles’ will be normal posts where they specify categories. So an event would be given the category ‘event’, but it may also be assigned other categories such as ‘social’, ‘training’, ‘race’ and so on.

If an event requires tickets, the normal post will include a link to an Open Tickets page where they can purchase tickets (Note: the Open Tickets event description will just contain details about purchasing tickets).

What I would like to do is let them include non-ticket events in the Event Calendar (that link back to the relevant normal post), and I’d like a shortcode for ‘upcoming events’ that I might use like this:

    <h2>upcoming events</h2>
    [events daterange=”current”]

Is there any way I could achieve these two gaols?

    Many thanks.

    Hi,

I just noticed that you do an extension called ‘Display Options’ that contains a shortcode for ‘upcoming events’.

Also, even though it is possible to select categories when entering an Open Tickets event, the post does not appear in the category listings. I guess this may change at a later date but I suspect nothing will happen on this front soon.

Since Open Tickets are not normal events, I suspect it might be difficult to include them in the event calendar – it would require entry of event details against a normal post.

And so putting all this together I think this might form the general gist of your reply. If my anticipation is correct, then never mind.

I can call the Event Calendar the ‘Ticketed Events Calendar’ as it only shows ticketed events.

Then I can add a custom date field to normal posts and use this field to produce my ‘upcoming events’ list. This work-around should suffice I think.

Please let me know if you can help me though.

    Thanks again.

    Hey @juliepayne76,

You are pretty much on target. We have a relatively new extension called Display Options which allows you to change how you display your events. Some feature highlights, in case you didn’t see them, are:

    – a shortcode and widget to display upcoming events based on certain criteria
    – a shortcode and widget to display featured events, which you select
    – the ability to have the events show in the ‘shop experience’ instead of requiring the user to go through the calendar

Now, you also had a second question: Can I have non-ticketed events, and how do I add them to the calendar? The answer to this is currently ‘no’. BUT, you are definitely not the first person to ask for this. As such, we are currently working on a way to allow for ‘non-ticketed’ events. It is still a little bit away from being ready for use, but once it does become available, we will be sending out a blast to our mailing list about it. If you have not already done so, and would like to receive that blast and others about our product updates, feel free to sign up for the news blasts on the sidebar of our site’s contact page.
