• I just updated my blog to version 2.3, and my permalinks stopped working. I get an error where it won’t load the page . However, it works when I put the permalinks back to default…

Any help is appreciated! My page is at https://www.grallhouse.com/nfblog

    Thanks.

This is the error I get if I click to look at a single post or at an archive:

    The page isn’t redirecting properly
Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.

    Anyone have a tip?

This worked BEFORE the update – why would it break permalinks?

Have you checked the troubleshooting tips at the Permalinks page?

After you change permalinks, is your .htaccess file getting updated/created?

My .htaccess file seems just fine. When I switch to default and back to date based, it recreates the file just fine.

Yes – I checked that page, but it didn’t seem to help.

Is this potentially a database error?

My RSS feed appears to be affected too – even in “default” permalinks.

I take it back – I would have to change my feed address to match the “default” and it would work.

Please help – why would this happen with the permalinks?

Should I just restore my backup for before the 2.3 upgrade?

Guess I’ll try to “downgrade” back to 2.2.x… since this version seems to be fubar-ed…

Did you deactivate your plugins? Looks like the same error message I received too.

I’m finding that with 2.3, I have to deactivate all plugins, go back to the default theme, then upgrade. Once the upgrade is done, then I can reactivate my plugins and my theme, and everything then works swell.

I had no plugins activated and I am using the default theme…

    I am back at 2.2.3…

You know, check your MySQL version. That might be an issue. I’m not sure if it is…because I haven’t run into the issue…yet (I still have over 100 blogs to update, so…fingers crossed.) Anyway, maybe WP will come out with a patch ASAP or you might have to wait for the WP gurus to check in here…of which I am not. I’m just a plain old ordinary old timer.

I upgraded to 2.3.2 now. Everything of the above is true in my case as well:
    *didn’t change permalinks structure
*used to work fine before the upgrade
*the only change i made was upgrading
*.htaccess is existent and gets created and/or updated properly if i delete it or reset the permalinks structure to default

i have read the using permalinks page – i haven’t found an answer in there.

i have a number of other wp installations under the same hosting account – i haven’t upgraded them yet, most are still running on 2.3.1 or lower – where the custom permalink structure is working perfectly fine. Any help would greatly be appreciated!

Just to let everyone know I turned off the computer – slept over the night and voilà – the problem is resolved

Just a suggestion, as I had the same problem, downloaded my whole site as a backup, then installed update etc, then friendly the URLs were all broken.

But when .htaccess is downloaded and saved locally, it becomes just ‘htaccess’, so when reuploaded to the server, make sure you rename it with the dot at the front, or it won’t work.
