I’m fairly new to WP and having trouble controlling how my media thumbnails get displayed. It is especially critical for my product catalog displays in Woo Commerce. I would rather not be constricted to having to edit every product image I have since many of those images come from third parties because I drop ship other company’s products and have take what they provide for me. Also there are many images so editing each is a lot of work. I want, and aught to be able to have the largest dimension of an image fill the boundaries of the thumbnail, but instead the images are getting arbitrarily cropped. The portrait images are getting chopped up very badly. I have tried tweaking display settings, but nothing seems to change. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers,
    – Jeff

I thought I should add a few other details. I’m using WooCommerce and the Vantage theme.

    The settings I’ve tweaked:

    WooCommerce/Settings/Products/Display/Product Images
Hard Crop? unchecked for Catalog Images, Single Product Image & Product Thumbnails

    Settings/Media
Thumbnail Size/Crop thumbnail to exact dimensions – unchecked

I also used the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin with no changes observed.

I tried uploading a new non-square image and it still crops the widest dimension for the media library thumbnail.

Also what I really want is no forcing of my images into a square for thumbnails.

OK I let the grid display of thumbnails in the media library fool me. I just looked at my product catalog pages and my thumbnails are now perfect. I’ll leave this post intact because the steps I did take may help another WP tenderfoot like myself.

    Cheers – Jeff
