I’d like to know if there’s a way to make the “Email” service in the “Sharing” module accept multiple email addresses at once, like a comma-delimited list, rather than just one.

The UI is a bit clumsy for anyone who wants to email a link to more than one person.

Thanks for all the great work, Jetpack is really great.

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

It used to be possible, but we’ve had to remove this option because the email sharing button was then abused by spammers who would use it to send emails to multiple email addresses at once.

I’m afraid we can’t bring that option back, as it would once again allow spammers to abuse resources on your site.

Interesting. Thanks for taking the time to reply to my question.

So even though the spammers didn’t have control over the message content they still abused it? What’s the point in spamming someone else’s content around?

Did you ever try an experiment with a hard limit like 5 email addresses?

I’m afraid I can’t tell you what their end goal is. I don’t really understand it either.

The problem is, even if it doesn’t benefit them, it could hurt you:

    • calling the email button multiple times in a short period of times could have an effect on your server’s performance.
    • If your hosting provider has some limits to the number of emails that can be sent out from your server, you’ll run into trouble.
    • Email providers like Gmail could start blacklisting all emails coming from your domain if spammers were to send many emails to them in a short period of time.

We didn’t, but that could be a good idea. How would you implement it in the form? Would you add a small message above the field mentioning that you can send to up to 5 email addresses?

The mind of a spammer must be a fascinating and confusing place.

Don’t you know? People who use the internet don’t read stuff like that. ?? I think I’d probably start with placeholder text inside the field itself to show an example like: “[email protected], [email protected]” then if stop them when they hit the limit with a nice error message.

    That seems reasonable!

I took note of your feedback here, and we’ll consider adding this option in a future Jetpack update. Feel free to subscribe to the issue to follow our progress on this.

    Thanks for the feedback!
