Negative product amount makes cart total 0

Hi,
Basically I’m looking for a way to manually add a fixed discount amount to an order in the backend. I’ve tried adding a “product” (without a price) and in the cart, give that a negative discount amount. When I click Save on the line items, all the tax and order calculations work perfectly. But when I proceed to save the order itself, the order total is reset to 0. Is that a bug or is there logic behind it?
If anyone knows of another way to manually add a fixed discount, please let me know.
