    Apologies for the trouble alankordas; that post is very out of date. Archimedes was just recently converted into an Inkblot child theme, actually; I’d recommend grabbing the latest versions of both Inkblot and Archimedes. Once you’ve got both of those, you can actually enter custom CSS via the Customizer (if you’re adding a lot of CSS, though, Archimedes’ style.css file may be easier).

    For the site navigation, the following CSS should work:

    .banner nav { background: url('path/to/your.img'); }

    The Webcomic navigation is widgetized in more recent versions of Inkblot (and, by extension, Archimedes). I would recommend using the [Webcomic] Link widget for those areas and uploading an image for your links through the widget. This can be done on the Appearance > Widgets page or directly through theme Customizer.
