500 Internal Server Errors When Accessing Dashboard

    We’ve been experiencing an ongoing error with our site since early on the morning of May 7th – after updating to the WordPress version 4.2.2.

    The front end of the site is working just fine, but we’re repeatedly getting a 500 Internal Server Error when trying to do anything on the backend: accessing the Dashboard, adding new posts, editing existing posts, etc.

    I’ve been on the phone with GoDaddy several times, and they keep telling me there’s nothing wrong on the server side. This morning, I re-installed 4.2.2, manually disabled all plugins via FTP, then began reactivating them one at a time. I didn’t get any errors until trying to reactivate the Wordfence Security Plugin – this resulted in a 500 Internal Server Error.

    So after refreshing my browser several times to get back into the Plugins page, I deactivated the Wordfence Security plugin, then reactivated my remaining plugins and everything seemed to be working correctly.

    About an hour or so later, I tried to login to the Dashboard, and once again was met with a 500 Internal Server error. I hadn’t made any additional changes, so I’m not sure what would have gone wrong during that time.

    Does anyone have any idea what I could/should be doing to try to correct this error?

    It’s worth noting that we didn’t have these issues until after upgrading to WordPress 4.2.2, and that the front end of the site has continued to function without problems.

  • mod_fcgid: read data timeout in 120 seconds

    increase the timeout, that is causing issues as script isnt able to complete processing in 120secs.

    also did you had cache enabled in wordfence? if yes remove all corresponding folders or read on wordfence cache on how to remove them

    also contact your support about this, some shared host actually limit resource acess due to limited resources.

    Our site is hosted via GoDaddy, and they don’t allow for the timeout to be increased.

    Anything else we can do? Would it make sense to downgrade back to 4.2.1, since we weren’t having any problems before the update to 4.2.2?

    enable error log in wordpress and then try to acess the backend, Server logs are too broad to pin point at the issue.

    Took your advice, and when I checked the debug log, it was enormous- over 500MB.

    There are pages and pages of these, and all of them seem to point back to line 400 of seo-links.php – is there a recommended fix for this, or should I just disable that plugin and call it a day?

    Update – disabled the plugin, but still having issues. Debug log is now showing an issue related to the theme I’m using. Have reached out directly to the theme author for more info.

    let the plugin author know about the issue too. so he can fix it for other users.

    The plugin is now working correctly. I disabled a ton of the modules in the Jetpack plugin and turned off W3 Total Cache, and so far I’ve been up and running for about 12 hours without a crash.

    [Error 500 Wordpres upgrade 4.2.2 SOLVED]

    I had the same problem and what I have done was:

    On CPanel goto LOGS Section and click on “Error Log” and I have found that the problem was that a lot of modules were with permissions “666” and should be “644”.

    I have changed the permisssions e.g. all php modules on wp-admin set permissions to “644”

    And it worked
