• I have about 30 minutes’ experience with WordPress, which is installed and properly working on my server, and my first question is, how does Blogging by Email work? I have tried sending an email with Blog: in the subject line and ___ as the terminator, but I must be using the wrong email address. The installation appears to have used the default email address, which is set to :fail: because spammers. How do I change the email address that WordPress uses for email posts? This looks like it is going to be fun, if I can get past the lack of documentation!

  • I found the explanation in the Wiki to be spot on.

Thanks, podz, but there is no options-writing.php file on my server (page not found), and I cannot even find the words “writing” anywhere in the admin panel. These documentation inconsistencies are major sources of frustrations for us beginners. Or, am I overlooking something obvious? Thanks for your assistance!

Which version of WP have you installed ?
You should have a view close to this :

Mmm.. if you click options on the main WP-Admin window. Another line of options (in grey) should open up below the usual line of categories.
    —————————
    Write|Edit|Categories
    —————————
    General|Writing| Bar in grey
    It should be right there!

Maybe we have found the problem: WordPress 1.0.1, assuming that’s the correct number. It’s posted at the bottom of the admin page. That sucks. Do I need root access (which I don’t have) to update to the latest version? I have NO IDEA how to do so. The installation was a FANTASTICO automatic installation.

Can I ask a silly question? What is the point of blogging by email? You need to be on a pc to email – and if you are on a pc – isn’t it easier to go to your admin and post from there?
I never do grasp concepts very quickly – sorry ??

Just a matter of personal preference. Plus, you can give the email address to others without giving them the admin password.

You could also use your phone / pda, sending email over for example a GPRS connection. A whole lot faster and easier than firing up a web browser and accessing the web interface (especially on a tiny screen…). That’s what I do on hultberg.org, photoblogging via phone and email: https://www.hultberg.org.

What format does the email have to be in to be able to post it? I tried sending an HTML email to my blog, and it showed up as garbage.

    Anybody?

When i tried, i only use plain text in my email to the WP.
Correct me if i am wrong, i believe that there’s some documentation that says that your emails need to be in text only.
I’ll source around and get back again.

The reason I would , and am thinking of setting up, the email to blog is I already have an exsiting mailing list I send newsletters to as well as other group mailings. I want to start transitioning them to RSS communications with podcasts.

I can have my posts automatically put on the blog each time we send info and updates. This will not only archive them, but make them available for searching through. For those who keep telling me that they did not receive my latest email, I can start getting them to the blog and not miss out on important information.

Still educating for RSS, podcasts. First have to get the group to install a Reader…

Email posting is one of the most important features to me, and I’d really like to get some clarification on what it can and can’t do. It seems that there’s very little written in the codex about the proper uses and limits of email posts, and I was wondering if some people could help me work it out.

    * First: I understand that the emails should be in text format. That’s fine, and sensible.

    * However, text emails have caused some serious problems for me with line breaks, and I often find myself going back when I get home to adjust them. Often, I find that each line is ended with an ‘=’ sign, which is a pain in the butt to remove from each and every line. This seems to depend on whether I’m using Yahoo, Gmail, or my own server mail.

    * Is it possible to include codes other than simple text in the emails? If so, what codes are and aren’t allowed? This is where one of the major problems with the odd line breaks comes in; if I have a particularly long URL and it breaks between lines, it causes gibberish. Yesterday, I was able to post using blockquote tags, but the other stuff didn’t come through formatted as I would have liked it.

    * Is there any way of putting some kind of code in the email body to tell WP to put the post in a category other than the default?

    Thanks much.

any answers to the =20 problem?

I to am looking for the answer to this issue.

    The =
    and =20
    are a real pain=20
    to=
    deal=
    20with.
    when=20
    reading a post.

I suspect it has something to do with the CR/LF characters but I am not a code guru and have no idea where to look.
