PHP Code vs Shortcode

I’m really liking SportsPress so far, but have been stalled on my tennis website because of a lack of .php custom code examples. For example, I want to customize the code on the single-player.php page, but really don’t know where to start.

I wanted the total record per season and then the career record overall (without broken down by year) and then previous matches as well as current/upcoming matches.

What are some example codes I can use on single-player.php to get this to happen using .php as opposed to shortcodes? Or shortcodes if I’m doing this wrong…
