This is a follow on thread from one I started about being unable to upload images which is now resolved by upgrading to the latest version of NextGen. So, I can now upload new images but…..,

    1. I can’t edit any thumbnails from any image other than the latest image I have uploaded since updating to the latest version of NextGen. When I try, there is nothing in the box on the left which normally shows the main image. The box on the right contains the thumbnail but I can’t select an area from the box on left because there is no image shown. I’ve tried creating new thumbnails from the “bulk actions” dropdown but still have the same problem.

    2. Since upgrading, the default font and size for the watermark has been changed from what I have used previously. I have no record of what that font and size was, so new images are being set with a different watermark watermark. I need to get the watermarks consistent across all images. I’ve been told that to reset the watermark, I need to use “recover from backup” under “bulk actions”. When I try this, I get a message “Unexpected error”, then “Done!” And the images still have the old watermarks.

    3. For the last 2 images I’ve added, the thumbnails are a different size. I’ve managed to find out that the earlier thumbnails were sized at 150 x 100. Since upgrading, the default thumbnail size was changed to (I think) 120 x 90. I’ve reset the default thumbnail size back to the original 150 x 100 but when I try to generate a new thumbnail from “bulk action”, the thumbnail displayed in the gallery is unchanged.

  • I also have problems with watermarks. Since some update image watermarks are not applied (text watermarks are). I tried using indirect paths, direct paths to the watermark image, various formats but in vain. I have to do it with some other third party program and then upload the watermarked pictures.

My web site is very important to me. It is critical to my business. There is no way that I will give log in and FTP credentials to an unknown third party. God knows what havoc could be caused.

@deckingman – We do understand your concerns but in some cases we simply cannot tell what is wrong from the front-side of the site. If you wish to create a mirrored version of your site for testing and development purposes we would be just as happy to help you sort it out on that installation.

    Thanks!

@photocrati. I don’t know how to go about creating a mirrored version – I build decks for a living and am not an IT guy. It took me a whole winter to put together the site and that was with substantial help from a professional who I can no longer call upon.

How about I delete all images from this particular gallery and start again? That would be a pain but it is something I could do myself when I have time (which is likely to be next winter).

If I did do that, would the images in the other galleries be safe and unaffected?

    Update,

I don’t know if this is any help but I can’t edit any thumb for any picture in any gallery. When I try, I get the window that says “select the area from the image on the left” but there is no images displayed. The web site itself seems to be working fine. All images are displayed as they should be.

@deckingman – From your descriptions there is most likely something going on with your site but again, we are simply not able to troubleshoot without the access we asked for.

Our apologies for all of your inconveniences, I can only hope our next update will help to resolve the issues you are seeing under these conditions.

    Thanks!

I’m trying to get some professional help with this as I have no idea how to go about creating a mirrored version of the site. It looks like I’ll have to pay someone to sort out this mess for me.

I think I have sorted this out. As ever, it was upgrading stuff that caused the problems. Following your advice, when I started to have problems, I upgraded to the latest version of WordPress and Nextgen. Before doing this, I backed up the site. To do that, I follow a crib sheet which a friend of mine did for me way back in time when he helped me put the site together. Part of this process involves using something called Plesk to give additional security permissions. However, when I came to use Plesk, there was an update to it which I installed. This update to Plesk basically screwed up the permissions settings that I had. IIS User no longer exists on the Plesk screen but there is now something called “Application Pool Group”. Having set the permission for this to “Full”, I am now able to edit the thumbnails. I haven;t yet tried to recover images from backup but I suspect it will work.

I do wish that software vendors would just leave things alone. I’m a great believer in “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. My web site works flawlessly until some update or other comes along, then I have all sorts of problems.

@deckingman – Well Done on finding and fixing the problem yourself!! It is extremely rare for a server environment update to cause problems but obviously in your case it was the issue.

    Thanks for the updates!

    @photocrati,

Thanks for that. I’m glad I managed to fix it without paying for professional help. I hope this information will be of use to others who may encounter similar problems.

@deckingman – It’s definitely not a common issue so sharing it is quite nice for others to find.

    Thanks, again!!
