Does Plugin Need to Remain Installed in Order to do its Magic?

Silly question, but does the plugin need to remain activated in order to do whats intended to do? Or is it one of those plugins that generates the sitemap and then can be deactivated afterwards?
My site has a ton of plugins and im looking to reduce the load.
