Beginner: accidentally deleted index.php

Is this the index.php file contained within your theme folder? If so which theme are you using?

If it is something like Twentyfifteen you can download the theme online and then use the index.php file from your new downloaded theme to replace the one you deleted. You can upload it to your site via ftp.

I am honestly not sure. I was going through and repairing the other files and the index.php only had a delete option, which I mistakenly clicked. My theme is the attitude theme by themehorse.

Can you get into your site via ftp and check which file is missing. There are several index.php files within wordpress. You need to find out which one is missing so that you can find the right file to replace it with.

Well, I have been trying to connect to ftp, but I really don’t know what I’m doing. I have filezilla and downloaded an xml file(ftp.mysite.com) from host (hostgator), but i’m not sure if this is correct or what I should be looking for.

Ok this isn’t really WordPress related, but you do need to access the ftp before you can solve your problem. Have a look at this video about filezilla and see if that helps.

I am able to access the ftp, but I am kind of uncertain what to look for and where.

I seem to have an index.php file in the wpadmin folder as well as in the wpcontent>themes and in the wpcontent>themes>attitude

is there a index.php file in previous folder than wp-admin?should be htdocs or public_html something.

yes you miss index.php file in root folder . login to ftp and you should drop in that directory itself(there will be 3 folders and bunch of php files). replace index.php from latest install of wordpress there.

Well, after connecting to the host, there are quite a few files in the default directory. I added it there, but nothing changed.

keep backups of files before deleting them in future.
