• I messed up the set up of my wootique and lost the original layout for the home page. (I was deleting unwanted pages and got that one by mistake) The page still works as far as the function, but only when I click my shop title image. I cannot open it in wordpress to do any customizing…. A little help please!

    thanks!

  • Have you tried restoring that page from your Trash?

Pages >> All Pages >> Trash >> [select page to restore] >> Restore

If it has been permanently deleted then you would need to restore your database from a recent backup to recover the page and all other settings from that backup point.

    Thanks for answering!

That’s the trouble..I emptied the trash folder. (I’m too ‘tidy’ I guess)
what if I backed up my work, then did an update to the theme? I’m at a loss how to proceed. It’s my first attempt at WordPress.

If you have emptied your trash then it is too late to create a backup now, as you would only be able to restore the site to its state now/when you back up – FYI all content you create is stared in the database. Your only alternatives are a) to contact your host and ask if they have a recent backup they could restore for you (this has worked for me in the past), or b) to rebuild the page manually from memory. I checked the web archive but there is no record of your page to use as a template.

Going forward, you might want to consider installing a good site and database backup plugin to give you more security in future.

OK! Thanks for the info and the well wishes. I am confused that the page itself is functioning, but, the url called /home is missing. Or I cannot find my way back to it. The link that works from the page title image will get me there. There’s just no ‘page’ in my Pages list called /home. Perhaps I could contact the Theme author (the theme is Wootique) and ask them for assistance?

If you look in the WordPress dashboard >> Settings >> Reading you will see “Front page displays” and an option to select your latest posts or a static page. Your site will have the static page selected. In the front page window will be the page that is being used as your home page, but the url will be set to https://yoursite.com and not https://yoursite.com/home/, regardless of the title of that page. Hope this helps.

OK! So if I want a Home page, say, on my menu…How do I recreate the page url called /home for the menu and get the Theme coding to be on it? I think I have the coding somewhere cause it works, you just can’t get to it from the menu. Only the title image I uploaded brings it up from the front end. And in the back end where the functions are I am not able to find it. (Of course, I may never have been able to. Since I was just setting up the theme and started with the products page, I had not opened it from the list yet, but, at least it was still on the list back then.)

I found a setting under Reading Settings called Front Page Displays.
It is set to Your Latest Posts.

X – Your latest posts ——————————this one is checked
    A static page (select below)
    Front page: ———–
    Posts page: ———–

If I understand your correctly then that’s quite straightforward. You go to Menus, add your homepage to the main menu, and give it the navigation label “Home”. Finally, drag the menu item to your preferred position: top = far left – bottom = far right

Ahh. I mentioned that earlier. You should set it to static page and then select your preferred page to show as your homepage. Then follow my advice about setting a “Home” menu item

Amazing!!! I hope it works. (at least i hope I implement it right)

I will, as you suggested, do a backup first!

Hope it works out. This is all part of understanding how the WordPress dashboard functions – something we’ve all be through with trial and error ??

I have determined that I have a Home Page, but, I do not have the previous version I need. My issue now is that I no longer have the original coding that came with Wootique. (OR I do have the coding, but, my /home is no longer linked to the coding) (OR, when I was trying to set up a menu I created an extra /home page and then deleted the original one that came with the Wootique Theme)

When I go to my first version of the /home page that I still have I get one from 3-25-15. My install date is 3-24-15 and all my other pages say that date as the first version.

Perhaps I can get them to fix that page for me?

You could try your hosts for a restore. Some offer this, some don’t.

Regarding the coding, the theme should be untouched (unless you’ve edited it through Appearance >> Editor – not recommended unless you know what you’re doing!), apart from the settings you have used to personalise it through the dashboard. Any page or post you create, and the content you create to those is stored in your database (settings/text content) and your uploads folder (media files). What you probably mean is the default setup that the theme arrived with before you made changes.

To create a new home page:

    1. Create a new page and give it the title and the content you want to feature
    2. Save
    3. Set this page as your homepage in Settings >> Reading
    4. Add it to your menu with the navigation label “Home”

    Voila ??

Thanks so much for your help so far…I did the 1 to 4 in your last post. Got a 404 error. Page Not Found. I have asked for help from the WooThemes site. In the meantime I incorporated a ‘button’ into the image that I use for my Title/Banner since that takes you there from any page. It points the shopper to click that image to go to ‘home’. Not the usual, but functional at least.

Perhaps the Woothemes will fix it!

You have been very kind to help me! You can check out my ‘fix’ Here to see if my image looks OK for this purpose…

    Thanks again!

Your home image link works fine.

Regarding the 404 error, did you have the “Home” menu item visible on your website main menu (I can’t see it now), and was the 404 error when you clicked that menu item?
