I have been using the “brute force” feature of wp security for a couple of weeks now with no problems and both of my websites. On one of my websites, when I go to the renamed wordpress login URL that I created, it simply goes to my homepage, even though the address bar says I’m where I should be. The website works, however I cannot access with WP login page for some reason out of nowhere… I know I am using the correct login URL. I’m not sure if this could be related, but even with the security I had multiple issues with malware somehow, and I ended up signed up with sitelock on both of my websites. They now clear any malware for me.

I read in another thread to simply view my .htaccess and find the login slug. Seems easy enough, and it worked for the other guy who had this same problem. I have tried many ways to view my .htaccess file, but all it says is

    “order deny,allow
    deny from all”

I’ve been using wordpress for about a year now, however I am not from a web development background so some of the really specific techniques I am not familiar with.

    Any advice?

Hi markjclemmens are you saying that you cannot access your login when you type https://www.yourwebsite.com/wp-login? If that is the case then the plugin is working correctly.

Once you enable the Enable Rename Login Page Feature: you no longer have access to the following logins.

You can only log into your admin site using the secret word in the URL i.e https://www.yourwebsite.com/secretword

I apologize if my description was a bit confusing, but no. I renamed the login page to https://www.receptivedesignstudio.com/a-bunch-of-numbers-and-characters. I used this “renamed” wp login page many times, and now when I enter my custom URL “renamed” login page, it simply goes to my homepage instead of the login page; even though the url says I should be at my WP login page.

I now need to figure out how to reset this feature, or find my wp-login URL in my .htaccess somehow (in case it was accidentally changed somehow from the “renamed” url I have been using)

If you enabled the “Rename Login Page” feature, then you won’t find an entry in the .htaccess file. If you can’t get access to your login page simply FTP to your host and temporarily rename this plugin’s directory.

If on the other hand you enabled the cookie based brute force feature then yes, there will be an entry in the .htaccess file and you can edit the .htaccess file and delete the section for the cookie based feature if you can’t get access your login page.

I have the same issue with markjclemmens. After setting up a new admin login page address through All in One WP Security, I am no longer able to access my WP dashboard. The new admin login page brings me to the homepage. Would like to know if there’s a way to go about it. I prefer to have a different login, rather through wp-admin as I’ve experienced brute force attacks before installing the plugin for a different site.

@yeelingtee if you have a cache plugin make sure you clear the cache. Log out and clear your browser cache as well and then log back in using your unique URL.

After the above try using a different browser if you have more than one and carry out another test.

wpsolutions Member, thank you for responding. Could you please expand on your potential solution? I did in fact enable the rename login page feature. I don’t know what you mean by “temporarily rename this plugin’s directory.” How do I go about this?

I apologize for my lack of knowledge on the subject.

    Hi markjclemmens,
I suggested renaming the plugin’s directory for the case where someone can’t access their login page due to apparent issues caused by the rename login feature.
To rename the AIOWPS plugin’s folder just FTP to your server and traverse to the “wp-content/plugins” directory and rename the “all-in-one-wp-security-and-firewall” folder. (You can alternatively use the CPANEL file manager to rename the folder)

Thank you so much that was easy and worked perfect.

One follow up question. Now that I’ve changed the directory name and I was able to login via website.com/wp-admin, how do you recommend “reinstalling” the wp security plugin? Can I change the directory name back while I’m logged in to my wp website?

Can I change the directory name back while I’m logged in to my wp website?

Yes you can and in most cases you should be fine. Just remember, after renaming the folder back and activating AIOWPS, go to the settings and disable whatever it was which was causing a conflict with your site.

Ok, thank you. Any ideas of what may be causing this issue? Is this is rare problem?

Due to the fact that I can’t reproduce this issue I have no idea of the cause. It is also not a common problem because we’ve had a relatively small amount of forum questions about it.

Same problem to me. When brute force prevention is enabled, I could reach the login page via my secret word, but when I try to login to WP administration I get 403 error (Access forbidden! You don’t have permission to access the requested directory. There is either no index document or the directory is read-protected). Is there any solutions to this particularry problem?

Hello, I have multiple sites and have changed the login page name on all of them. Some (I’d say around 5) sites have now blocked me out with the 403 error menioned in the post above but the rest are fine. I have to rename the plugin folder to access but after putting it back, I get blocked the next time I try to get in. I have added my IP to the whitelist but still get this problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
