• My website is CitySquash.org

I am completely unable to add sub pages to the existing pages on the site.

For example, there is currently a dropdown option that reads “Team”. I would like to add an item to the dropdown called “Brooklyn Board” (for our board of trustees in Brooklyn). I have seen a number of youtube videos on how to do this and read wordpress instructions and have followed them exactly as per the videos/descriptions (add new page –> assign parent page –> publish). However, even after I publish the page, it does not appear as an option in the dropdown.

Can someone please help? WordPress allows me to add promotions, but will not let me add new pages (will only let me change the content of pre-existing pages).

    Please respond ASAP! Thank you!

  • This sounds like you also need to edit the Menus (Appearance — Menus). Please see the Codex article on Menus that will walk you through on how to set it up.

Do you know if your site is using the standard WordPress menu or a custom menu? If your site is using a custom menu, you need to manually add it to the menu where you want it. You would go to Dashboard -> Appearance -> Menus to configure the menu.

It looks like your site has a custom theme developed for it, so if that doesn’t work, you’ll need to contact the person who set up the site and see how it’s supposed to work.

Matt – very helpful, thank you. I am sure that this is a custom menu, but the individual who created this website (a long while ago) is no longer with our organization, so I cannot reach out to him/her (though I’m trying to dig up who it is).

In terms of trying to manually add things to the menu, when I go to Dashboard, there isn’t an “Appearance” option or a “Menu” option (I’m guessing this is because the entire thing is custom). Do you have any thoughts on how else I can begin editing the custom menu/what else I can do here to work with this?

    Thanks

Take a look at the header.php file in the theme folder and see if the menu was hard coded in there.

Does your user have admin capability? I just want to make sure that’s not why you don’t have the Appearance option.
