I keep noticing old posts from my blog suddenly not working anymore, seemingly arbitrarily. The most recent example I can find is a post from 12/23/14, which when you try to view it now, all you see is the headline, but none of the content of the post, which includes text and photos. And even if I try to view the post in edit mode, the content only shows up for a couple of seconds, and then disappears and flashes over to that dark blue “Aww, Snap!!” screen, indicating some problem with the photos. The thing is, nothing whatsoever has been changed about any of these photos (and they worked fine the last time I looked at the posts in question, some time in the last month or so); and other posts with photos (some of which are older than the one mentioned above) where the photos do work, which is why this problem seems largely arbitrary to me.

Has anyone dealt with this problem and gotten it resolved?

Thank you

Deek

Try deactivating all plugins. If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, try switching to the Twenty Fifteen theme to rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

Hmmm…
Okay I just confirmed that I don’t have any currently enabled extensions; and I also tested the High End, 2014, 2013, and 2012 themes (the 2015 theme was my current theme already), and the problem presented equally in all of these themes.

Any other steps to try?

You have no active plugins on your blog? I see that some of your images are going through Photon, part of Jetpack, a plugin.

(@deekadelic)

Oh, my bad. I initially thought you meant to deactivate all Google Extensions.

Okay so I tried deactivating all of the wordpress plugins in my blog, and reactivating them one by one, each time then trying to reload two of the problem pages; and in all cases the problem persisted.

What to try next?

Thank you

Was the problem there with *all* plugins *deactivated*?

Thread Starter deekadelic

(@deekadelic)

Yes, I had the problem with no active plugins, as well as with each individual plugin as the only active one.

Ok, the “Aww Snap” error is actually part of Chrome.

Do you see anything different with another browser, like Firefox?

You know, I hadn’t tried that. But I just tried it now, and the posts all display fine in Firefox.

This does beg the question, though: What do I do about this, when half the world is using Google Chrome as their primary browser?

Moderator James Huff

(@macmanx)

That is indeed a great question.

Can you paste the HTML contents of the post here?

There sure was a lot of water being tossed about - all the more noteworthy when you consider?that this was a day with no wind and no other aerial, aquatic, or tectonic upsets that might stir the soup up that much more.

I think the problem might be the video size. How does it work out if you go for 640×480 instead?

Thread Starter deekadelic

(@deekadelic)

I tried taking the video out entirely, and the problem still persisted. In fact, now the problem has spread to other posts, including the most recent one, which doesn’t even have any videos in it.

This is bizarre, and maddening.

Moderator James Huff

(@macmanx)

Hm, that one still works for me. Perhaps there’s something in your browser?

What version of Chrome are you running?

Moderator James Huff

(@macmanx)

Interesting, https://www.deekadelic.com/2014/12/23/no-talkin-man-all-action/ is also working for me in Chrome now too.

Thread Starter deekadelic

(@deekadelic)

Chrome is so weird. Before and during the life of this thread, I checked several times and confirmed that my Chrome was fully up-to-date and running the latest version; so I had dismissed the idea that out-dated Chrome could be the problem.

Then, after reading that you guys were not having problems viewing the post(s) in question, I went and re-ran the Chrome update, figuring it might overwrite the existing installation. And apparently it did, because now the problem is gone!

Lately Google and Chrome have both been buggy and unreliable; but at least the problem proved fixable. Thanks for your attention to this, guys.

One last question though: were you guys at any point experiencing the “Aww, snap” nonsense when trying to view any of my blog posts, or did it always look fine on your browsers?
