i want to add a custom search box

    You most can certainly do that using the plugin, but I would recommend creating a custom post type to store records such as program names in which you will also create custom meta fields to store specific details about the program which in turn can be searchable by the plugin.

    Please read documentation on creating a custom post type here: Creating a post type.

    Keep in mind that you must be working with a child theme in order to avoid losing your work when the parent theme gets updated.
