• Is it possible to have multiple sites share one upload folder?

I know it’s not common or designed, but here’s my situation.

The website in question was set up in 2012-2013 by an outside firm before I started working here (I know how to set up and manage websites, but that’s my main job title… or even what I was officially hired to do), so I’m having to work with what someone else set up.

We have clients who log into our site for member-only access. The clients/users (over 1,200) fall into 8 different groups. The website is currently set up as a multisite with the main site and 8 other sites (plus a few others that have since been discontinued) that are the member only sections. There are very few differences between the 8 sites, but much of our content is duplicated 8 times. Some of our content is interactive training material made up of many small files.

The size of the blogs.dir folder is 11.7GB from 57,096 files. If I could consolidate those files down into one place, it’d only be 1.85GB from 7,336 files.

Since we’re controlling all the content on all the sites, I don’t think there’s much of a security risk. Normal users don’t upload or comment… they only access information and fill out forms.

    Thanks.

    Possible: Yes.

    Smart: Rarely.

I wouldn’t do it. But then again, I have pretty firm views on duplicating content.

(summary: it’s never a good idea, there’s never a good reason, don’t do it)

    (caveat: Stores don’t count)

Thank you for your reply and the link.

What are your firm views on duplicating content? When you say ‘content’ are you referring to the files on the server or what is shown on the website?

The content shown on the website is all private (i.e. not reachable without login) and is only duplicated as a function of the structure of the site.

Since moving this site to a different server is such a time-consuming headache, I believe I’ll end up rebuilding the site as a regular WP site with some kind of membership tool/plugin to control who sees what content. I’ll be able to make it nicer looking in the process. I have more research to do before I start that process, though.

Most of the content is identical, but the different groups get different branding and links and some don’t need to see some of the content.

You should never have identical content on two sites. It kills your SEO and, worse, confuses users who see the same content in multiple places. Also you now have a pain in the butt keeping it all in sync.

There are two real exceptions here, stores and multiple languages, but in both cases, Multisite MAY not be the right answer.
