Hi, I’m redoing a website for a client.

    The theme is Philanthropy.

For some unbeknown the website hangs for an absolute age as soon as it starts to load, and then once it’s hanged for about six seconds everything else loads in normally. This is sort of the same for the WordPress dashboard side too….

The hosting is with the company who built their old site, that site was just more of a placeholder so they fully expected us to build onto their hosting eventually. I manually installed WordPress through FTP, and have copied across all the old website’s files onto my Mac and removed them from the server, to see if there was some sort of conflict between the two (my web knowledge is extremeley primitive – we’re doing the site as a favour for the client…)

Funnily enough, when the old site files were on the server, and I navigated to that, it loaded in no problem.

Here is the pingdom info, showing the wait: https://s24.postimg.org/iw6avwlol/Screen_Shot_2015_02_27_at_13_54_43.png

I have two plugins activated, coming soon and clone posts.

the site is cf-trust.org, I have a coming soon page activated but can takedown if need be.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, I don’t want to call the company who host it if it’s my problem. Thanks in advance.

It’s hard to see with Coming Soon page up. We’d need to see the affected site to being to make any recommendations.

As for the Coming Soon page itself, that 1.5 MB background image certainly isn’t helping the situation. ??

Hi James thanks for replying, I can take the Coming Soon page down but it would need to be for a specific time window, so if you got back today I could take it off for you to look at.

In terms of the 1.5MB background image, that doesn’t really present a problem here for us because we can see this image (and other content) load in separately after the ginormous ‘wait’. It also hangs in the same way on the WordPress Dashboard (publishing/updating a page etc).

Our work internet isn’t very good so I think the wait time is a bit less from other computers but there’s still a significant ‘wait’ wherever you load it in from.

Just a note – I’ve disabled the Coming Soon plugin (10:25am) and will keep it off for a few hours in case anyone reads this and fancies a look at the site to see if they can suggest anything.

    Thanks

The server response time appears to be what’s slow, that’s the dead time between accessing the site and anything else happening. It took a total of 6.75 seconds for the server to respond, and 5.07 seconds for everything to load once it did. For a site with that many slider images, 5.07 seconds isn’t all that bad, but the 6.75 second of just waiting for the server to even acknowledge the visit is pretty painful.

That’s something only your hosting provider can fix, unless you’re managing your own VPS or dedicated server.

https://gtmetrix.com/ and https://www.webpagetest.org/ are two great tools to check your site with.

Both offer suggestions on how to speed things up beyond the server response time, as well as a detailed timeline view so you can see how each individual element is affecting load time.

Under GTMetrix, server response time is listed as “Waiting” under that first hop in the Timeline view. Under WebPagetest, it’s a bit easier to see, server response time is listed as “First Byte” in the overview.

Thanks for your help James, I’ll contact the hosting provider to talk it through, and I’ll check the other websites you provided to try and improve the loading times I can control (site content/sliders, etc)
