Permalinks 404 error after trying all thread suggestions

    I recently downloaded the latest WP 4.1.1 and using mamp on my mac OS X 10.8.5 localhost to build before putting on hosting. I finished the site and realised I hadn’t changed the permalinks to postname. When I did all navigations links except home return a 404 error.
    I have followed all instructions on making changes to my httpd.conf file I used terminal to try and find .htaccess file but I can’t find it.
    Before I updated to WP 4.1.1 my permalinks were working.
    Someone please help I have been working on this for 2 days now. I have 5 websites I have to build and I don’t want to have to build live.
