• I am unable to get the password reset operation to work. You can request a password reset, it emails you the Password Reset email, when you click the link it takes you to the reset page and displays the error:
“Sorry, that key does not appear to be valid.”
And your only option is to request a reset again. Rinse, repeat.

I tried clearing the cache, different browsers, resetting the secret key salt, disabling all plugins and setting the theme to 2015. I cannot get it to work. I then tried another site on the same server, also running WP 4.1.1 with a different set of plugins and had the same behavior – password reset will not work.

Is anyone experiencing this? More importantly, how to fix it?

Just manually reset your password via phpMyAdmin

Unfortunately that is not going to solve the issue though – the site has about 100 members – they WILL forget their passwords and need to have the reset function working properly. I can help them manually for the moment but I’m looking to find the root of the issue.

OK I tried another WP site on the same server and it is also having the same issue. That’s 3 separate sites on the same server with the same “Sorry, that key does not appear to be valid.” message when you attempt to retrieve your password.
I just tested another installation on a different server and same error.
Is anyone else running into this?

That’s 3 separate sites on the same server with the same “Sorry, that key does not appear to be valid.”

That suggests likely server-specific issue. The server may have implemented some security measure(s) causing this issue. Try discussing this with your hosting provider

But I also tested a 4th site on a separate server – same issue.
So your password reset is working?

I took this up with the hosting provider. They were able to successfully reset passwords but when I asked them to connect via proxy so they were not connecting from their internal IPs then they were able to replicate the issue. But we still don’t know why it is doing what it is doing, it is something about the servers but we aren’t seeing anything in logs.

I found the easiest and fastest work around the “Sorry, that key does not appear to be valid” issue using your cell phone.
1.) Just use your cell phone to access your password reset email.
2.) Click on the link in the email. The link will automatically open the site where you can input your new password.
3.) Follow the prompts to enter your new password.
    4.) Save your new password
5.) You should now be able to access your WordPress website with your new password from any computer, business as usual.

    I hope this helps everybody!

I tried via a cell phone and that did not work either. For months I have on spare minutes tried different browsers, computers, email access methods, without success.

Why is this apparent basic problem not fixed? I see 1650 messages with the same problem, month after months maybe even years. Other websites never have this problem, at least I have never seen it.

I do not know php, ftp and so on to use those options in the often referenced link to this problem.

Are there any other simple suggestions to help me out?
    Thanks in advance,
    Bertho
