We have a WordPress site that was fully operational and working fine then it was brought to my attention that Google flagged us as “this site may have been hacked”.
In reading on the matter it seemed like I needed to be up to date on the WordPress release. I believe I was in a version of 3. I can’t get back in so I’m not sure. I clicked the update WordPress button and that’s where my problem started. Site was inaccessible. I also inadvertently cleaned out the MySQL db so all of my content was gone.
I’ve had our ISP do a restore of a backup. They put all the files that were on the ftp site on a certain in a folder which I then moved to the WordPress folder and replaced anything that was there. The issue I am having now is that when I login to the admin console it is telling me that a database update is required. Does that mean I successfully updated WordPress but not the db?
I’m concerned that clicking update will wipe the db again and my content will be lost.
I know I have a lot of issues going on but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It won’t wipe the db, unless you’re running some sketchy plugin. It will just update the database schema to the latest version.

Thanks Konstantin. I updated the db now I can get back in.

What had caused this issue was going in to the Admin console and upgrading to the newest version of WordPress.

Any suggestions as to how to upgrade without causing issues?

I believe I was in a version of 3.

You needed to do a series of incremental updates –

yes that’s where I’m at now.

I believe I’ve restored to that. When I login it’s showing version 3.4 and all of my page data is back. However my theme does not appear to be working.

What if you switch to a default theme? (Maybe twenty ten? – is that in the themes section?) Did your theme get updated? May well have compatibility issues.

Was your site actually hacked? Or was that just because you’re on an old version (which is a big security risk)?

uggghhh I just clicked the Theme I had been using to activate and now I can’t get back into the console.

I believe the site was in fact compromised in some way although I don’t know how to confirm that. There were quite a bit of spam posts and when you searched Google there were many links with our domain and Viagra type ads.

Oh definitely hacked – do you have a backup from before it was hacked? That would be the best way to solve this. Otherwise see:

I don’t think I have a backup from before…..I have to do some digging.

I’ve been trying to locate the best way to restore and I don’t seem to be able to find anything for the “core” files, just the MySQL db.

When restoring from a ftp backup do I delete all the files that are on the server then just upload the local copy?

suggestion: instead of backup try to put a fresh copy of wordpress, let the DB settle then put your old theme try to restore the look and feel.

Yes I would do so provided you have backup in your local or some where

however you will need the old wp-config.php with DB log in details and make sure there is noting wrong
