• Hi everyone

When I make changes on an existing page and then press UPDATE … the page disappears and the old version of my page appears on the website. Normally I should remain on the ‘edit page’ page … but no, the home page of the website shows instead. Any changes I have made are not taken into account or saved.

In fact, my site is now frozen and I can’t do anything with it. Is this due to 4.1 or is there something else afoot?

    Thanks

  • Did this happen right after up updated to 4.1? Have you tried deactivating your plugins – manually if you don’t have access to your Dashboard? (You’ll need to use FTP or Cpanel to do so – by renaming the plugins folder to plugins.HOLD.)

Thanks for the advice. I deactivated my plug-ins but the situation remains. I can access my dashboard and I can open my pages for editing. I can change a word here or there but when I come to save the page by pressing UPDATE … nothing happens, or rather, nothing gets saved. The screen just flips to my home page. I go back to the editing page and it is as it was before I made the changes.

Could you post a link to your site with ALL plugins deactivated and using a default theme (twentyfifteen).

Alas, it won’t work. I am using a Genesis/AgentPress theme for estate agents and it appears impossible to even change to twentyfifteen (I keep getting a “Session expired. Please log in again” message).
The site is https://www.gitesavendre.eu/ …but with all the plugins dis-activated none of the internal links work (agentpress listing plugin)

You’ll need to deactivate the theme manually as well – change the name of the active theme on the server as well:

    wp-content
        theme
            agentpress.HOLD
        plugins.HOLD

Looks like some plugins (Yoast) are still active) – did you rename that folder?

Did this problem arise after updating or changing anything?

I have changed the name of plugins and theme to .HOLD as indicated … nad now I can’t get back into my wp-login page : The requested URL /wp_login.php was not found on this server. So I have now lost everything: site and dashboard!

Did this problem initially arise after updating or changing anything?

Do you have a default theme in the themes folder – you always should. Put one in there manually if not.

I have not touched the site since 6th February when everything worked fine. No software updates since then, nothing.

I have all the twenty themes from ten to fifteen in the theme folder. But as I can’t get into my dashboard any more I cannot activate them!

If you have renamed the active theme on the server, WP automatically defaults to a default theme. Given that you have not done anything, have you checked with your hosting? You might want to do that before doing anything more – just in case.

The other thing you can do at this point is download a new copy of WP to your local computer and replace all files and folder EXCEPT wp-content and wp-config.php with new copies. Be sure to delete the old versions before uploading the new ones.

I’m afraid this is too technical for me: I can’t risk doing all this. My site has to be on line. I will check my hosting service… but I am putting the site back on line for the moment.

    Thanks for your help.

I find that there is a file named update-core.php which was uploaded into wp_admin today at 11.59 AM. Could this be the source of the problem?

Sounds like possibly an update that didn’t work correctly – in which case, you’d need to do a manual update – more info here:
