I wish to take a site that is currently running with manual updates of the core. However the host (dedicated server) has a SIM which allows automated updates via itself only. What I wish to do is transfer the site onto a new auto core. Currently the core is 4.0 running with woocommerce. I wish to move it onto 4.1 within the SIM. Is there a best practive way of doing this ?

Should I just load up a new WP site/core and re-point it to the old site database, and load up all the necessary wp-content, etc. Or is there a better practice!

What’s a SIM in this context?

Regardless of that, WordPress does support automatic updating of itself and even of plugins or themes, if you want to go that route. By default, it only applies minor core updates to itself, and lets you press the manual one-click button for major updates.

But, a few settings in the wp-config.php will enable it for full-automatic, if you like. More information on that can be found here:

    That’s the crux.

If WordPress is loaded up by SIM, software installation manager on a dedicated server, then it he core can only be updated automatically via the SIM. However I did not know this and started manually upgrading the core. The problem is the manual upgrade is a very timely process as the server is in the states, and I in the UK.

For clarity, the host modified the scripts to stop WP core automatically update outside the SIM so they can make sure it won’t corrupt the server, etc. Plugins, themes update no problems.

Hence I’ve built quite a large site and would like to get the core update back to automatic rather than manual.

Honestly, that doesn’t feel right to me at all. WordPress can’t corrupt a server, much less updates to WordPress. It’s far more likely that they’re doing something behind the scenes to your WordPress installation that they don’t want a normal WordPress update to undo.

Even if they aren’t doing something shady behind the scenes, they’re basically saying they want you to apply critical software security updates on their schedule, not WordPress’s immediate release schedule. That doesn’t sound secure at all.

We don’t have any control over Software Installation Managers, so you’ll need to get in touch with your hosting provider about how to switch that back on (or move to a different host that doesn’t intentionally break software updates, which is what I’d do).
