• Hi all,

I’ve had my blog up and running for a few days now and everything was going fine. I’m using the twenty fourteen theme with a few plugins (Awesome Social Icons, Social Login, Social Share Boost & WP Subscribe). Then 2 days ago, out of nowhere, the “Customize” page refused to load. I thought it might be a problem with my server, but no other sites were having an issue, including the rest of my blog. So I waited until the next day (yesterday), thinking it would resolve itself, but it didn’t and still hasn’t today. It didn’t happen right after I’d installed something – it just happened out of the blue, so I don’t know what it could be connected to. I need to change the front page from a static page to posts, but I can’t do that without the customize page.

When I try to go to the page, the tab says “loading” and shows the little wheel, and it shows the top of the bar on the left that says “Customize,” but that’s it. It just sits there indefinitely. I let it sit for over an hour last night.

Help! I can’t launch my blog until I get this resolved and I’m worried I’m going to have to scrap everything I’ve done and reinstall. ??

You won’t be able to see it, since it’s on the back end, but it says to put a link to my site, so here it is: https://www.savinafrancisco.com/blog

    Thanks for any help!!

SOLVED! I figured out what the problem was. I’ll post the solution here, in case anyone else runs into it:

I figured there might be a compatibility issue with one of the plugins, so I deactivated all of them, then I logged out and logged back in. Then I systematically activated each one, one by one. After I activated one, I’d check the customize page to see if it was the one causing the issue. I found that the WP Subscribe plugin is the one causing it to hang up. I still want that plugin and it works just fine for me, so whenever I want to make changes to the customize page, I’m going to have to deactivate that plugin and then reactivate it when I’m done.

    Hope that helps someone!

I’m having the same problem; it was fine last night, but now the customize page won’t load. I tried your solution, but it didn’t work for me. Any other suggestions? Thanks for any help.

lrdeseife – did you try deactivating the plugins one-by-one, and checking to see if the Customizer comes up?

    I deactivated them all.

I just tried again — activated them all, logged out and logged back in,then deactivated them one at a time. Customizer still won’t load.

What about the theme? Did you try switching it to a default one, like Twenty Fifteeen, and then check?

Under Drop-ins I have something called install-php. Could that be causing the problem? It says, “Drop-ins are advanced plugins in the wp-content directory that replace WordPress functionality when present.”
If this could be the problem, I can’t figure out how to deactivate it. Any help?

When I switched to a default theme, it worked; but when I switched back to the one I want, it doesn’t work. I had the other one already set up, and I don’t really want the default theme. Solution?

I just checked another theme that I had uploaded and that works too. It’s only the one I switched to yesterday that doesn’t work. Could it be that there’s a picture I added last night isn’t compatible?

Tried some other default themes and they don’t work either. Only a couple – one default and one I uploaded work. What else can I try at this point?

Hi, I’m also having the same issue, and have tried all of the above. Has anyone found a solution to this?

I have the same problem. Twenty fourteen theme won’t let me customise. It just sits and spins its wheel. I’ve not done anything to trigger this so something has changed somewhere. I don’t have auto updates on either so it isn’t an update that happened while I was away.

An answer would be wonderful. I’m about to try the deactivate all plugins bit.

I read somewhere that a server side library zip tool compresses pages for faster loading and was causing the problem for some people. ZLIB whatever that is.

Started at the top with Booking Calendar. Deactivated and customize loaded to work. Reactivated Booking Calendar and it went back to not working. So this is the culprit.

Not sure what it is doing to me, but I’ll customise what I need to then turn it back on so I can use its functionality.

This probably won’t help anyone else, but hey, it is all about sharing. Good luck amigos.
