strange resizing

All 3 of my featured boxes have the same thumbnail, 232×232. I had a 232×232 thumbnail in the middle box and it looked exactly like the others. I then changed it to another 232×232 thumbnail and now it is being resized/zoomed.

Why?

I have tried 3 more images all 232×232 and they all get resized but when I return the original 232×232 image it shows correctly, not zoomed/resized.

I deleted the original image from media library, deleted the page, created new page from scratch with new 232×232 desired image and again it gets resized, returned to original 232×232 image and it doesn’t get resized.
