I have set up and author role. I want the author to be able to edit their own posts and read anyone elses. The edit limitation I’ve got working but when they pull up the all posts screen they can only read published posts not posts that other authors are working on. The VIEW or PREVIEW option never presents in the menu.

I also noticed that this role does not present the full TINYMCE menu buttons for writing options like the other roles do.

Thanks in advance for the assist.

It is right for WordPress: author role may view only published posts of other users. Preview of pending posts is available for the users with Editor or other role which has ‘edit_others_posts’ capability.

As about TinyMCE menu buttons I see that an author has access to the same set of buttons presented by default as other roles do. It may depend from the plugin, for which role or capability it adds extra buttons to the TinyMCE toolbar.

Thanks. I got around the Tiny MCE problem with a fix I found elsewhere.

I’m surprised that reading posts doesn’t apply to those in process. I have multiple writers contributing and I wanted each to be able to view other people’s work in process to see not only content but style used for a specific article.

Having said that I don’t want to have to give them permission to edit someone else’s work to do it.

I wrote plugin for your situation. It allows all logged-in users with ‘edit_posts’ capability (who may create posts) to preview all posts in the ‘Draft’ or ‘Pending’ state.
In order to try it extract .php file from this archive:
    https://storage.googleapis.com/role-editor/downloads/preview-pending-for-authors.zip
    and place it into wp-content/mu-plugins
It is a special WordPress folder for so-called “must-use” plugins which don’t require activation and are executed automatically.

    Thank you for your efforts.

This new plug in allows me to see there are posts written by other users. When I select all posts and I do get a preview tab. When I click on the preview tab however I get a 404 page not found error. I think this is because the page is scheduled but not yet published.

Yes, I did not take into account the scheduled posts. Please download plugin again from the same link and replace file with updated version.
