2 weeks ago I experienced a complete failure of the automatic upgade to 4.1 on one of my sites, and was left with a blank white screen.

I spent a week getting and trying different solutions suggested by various moderators, nothing seemed to work.

I finally terminated the site with my hosting company, Established a new account with the same domain name, loaded a new wodrpress install form cpanel, let wordpress auto upgrade again, and the contacted the hosting company to restore the mysql data base from the old site to the new one using a backup file I supplied.

The result was the home page of the site came up, after logging into admin using the credentials I had for the old site and making some changes to the theme options, I had the full site back, less all images. All plugins were restored. Now in the process of uploading and replacing images.

I think the original problem may have been started by a malfunctioning plugin. Sure wish I had done this first, many hours would have been saved.

A much simpler approach would have been to turn on the display_errors option in the installation, find out what the error message was, and then correct the error on the site.

A “white screen” simply means that a fatal error is occurring which prevents the site from running. Enabling display_errors lets you find out what that error actually is.
