• I’m using the default install of Akismet in my website, and I’m trying to activate it, but every time I try to save my key, it goes

The key you entered could not be verified because a connection to akismet.com could not be established. Please check your server configuration.

    Does anyone know why?

  • Get with your host and double check to see if 1) php if allowed to use fopen() and 2)they haven’t blocked outbound port 80 calls. The plugin can’t contact the askimet servers. One of those causes is usually the reason.

It’s been discussed a few times over if you’re interested.

    Hope this helps,

What do I do if that doesn’t solve it?

If your server can’t connect to the akismet server, perhaps you might try an alternative to akismet? For instance, I use Spam Karma 2.

Hey nice. just installed that one before I read this post.
Does it work good for you?

I’ve bounced back and forth between it and Akismet several times over the past year or so.

I feel a bit more control with SK2. Conversely, Akismet is much more “hands-off”. I think they both do a pretty good job. ??

I also run Bad Behavior as an extra “pre” layer of defense and find it very impressive.

    I’m having the same problem
