• Hi,

I have an issue with wordpress adding -2 or -3 to the url. Example below.
    https://www.advanced-ir.com/moisture-2.html
It will not allow me to change it on the edit page. The above page was uploaded to the server but I have another one that has -3 but is not uploaded but the page on the server is incomplete.

I have read that I may need to empty the trash but I have not seen where to do that yet.

    Can someone help?
    I am using 4.1.

    Jeff

  • This is default behavior when a post or page exists already with the ‘slug’ (minus the -2), including in the trash. Make sure no other slug ‘moisture’ exists. When you do, you can then just rename the slug for that page or post manually in the editor.

I am afraid with being new to wordpress I do not know what a slug is.
Where exactly would I find this?
Thanks and sorry for all the simple questions.

The slug is shown in the editor just under the Title and is the last part of the URL. It is based on the Title (unless manually edited). You can use search to find it (them) from All Posts or All Pages. If your have trashed posts or pages you will see the trash link atop the editor.

There is no trash link, only all-published-draft. So maybe there is nothing in the trash.

I still fail to find any other instance of moisture.html
Moisture is a word found many times on this site. Is there another way to look for it.

Me too – this is infuriating! I have a page called Monthly, there is no trash item with that name, no post or item anywhere yet WP refuses to allow me to change the slug back Monthly from Monthly-1 – I can of course change it to anything else! I have tried cleaning the database and still no joy – I have not seen an answer to this problem in all the past 4 years posts I have searched this last hour or so – the thread always just ends with no solution. Doesn’t anybody know what to do if you have a duplicate name that actually doesn’t exist anywhere you can actually get at it – I don’t want my swanky new site to have URLs that are obviously amateur looking?

Looking at your site, it seems you found the fix. Can you share with us what you found to be the culprit?

Hi John – yes I posted the answer elsewhere but forgot this thread! Mine was simple – I found I had an image in my media library with exactly the same name as a page, apparently this is not allowed but not mentioned anywhere either! I deleted the image (as it wasn’t even being used anywhere) and straight away I could rename my page – hope this helps! ??
