I am having a problem with a site that has been up for about one year. Starting this week, I haven’t been able to do the following in WP admin: update plugin, delete plugin, delete theme.

Here is the error when I tried to delete a plugin:
Plugin could not be deleted due to an error: Could not fully remove the plugin(s) xxxx

Here is the error when I tried to update a plugin:
    Plugin update failed

Now – here’s the stranger part:
On the plugins I tried to update and delete, the plugins disappeared from the WP admin, but I can still see them on the FTP site.

I don’t know if it is a folder permissions issue. The plugins folder is 755 but the individual plugins are 555. For the two I tried to update / delete, I changed them to 755 before doing the update / delete and then changed them back to 555.

I’m stumped on the cause and solution. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Update with additional information…

I can install new plugins through WP admin and can also delete the newly installed plugins.

I changed the permissions on each plugin to 755 and tried another test to delete a plugin – the result was the same (message “Could not remove the old plugin. Plugin update failed.” The plugin disappeared from WP admin but still displays on FTP site.)

chmod the directory and delete the plugin via ftp.
