• Ok, I’ve been having a lot of trouble importing into WordPress from a WordPress.com account. As I mentioned here, I was having problems just getting the file to import. But now that it’s importing, I’m having another issue.

WP imports anywhere from 0 to 4 posts & comments at a time. Then it freezes. Then I have to refresh, and it goes through the list “Post xxx already exists” etc until it gets to a new one. It imports 0-4 and freezes again. Etc.

It’s not generating an error on the server. I tried importing a small file of fewer than a hundred posts and it still does it.

Any ideas? I’d assume something is timing out, but I can’t figure out what, and like I said, it’s generating no errors.

  • Just an idea – I don’t know how correct it would be – but it *could* be your host has some kind of PHP timeout set – or your MySQL has a timeout set.

Have you tried just logging into your database via phpMyAdmin and just importing that way?

How would I do such a thing? I mean, I know how to get in via phpMyAdmin, but I don’t know how to import from there.

you go into your database, select your WordPress table, and right at the top is a big link that says “import”.

I *believe* (but you’d have to be sure) that the WP backup of WP is a .txt file. If so, you can just go into the “import” page and locate the file and “Go”.

The WP export of a WP file is xml.

I don’t really know what the difference is and if you can just change it to a txt.

What would that method do with duplicates?

I believe you can import XML as well. Duplicates would be overwritten.

And that would get comments, too?

Well, that didn’t work. I tried uploading as xml and as txt, but either way I get a SQL error.

There seems to be an error in your SQL query

It seems I’m destined not to get this blog online.
