Noob question about themes

    So this is my first post. I have spent roughly 2 days researching and I am more confused than on the day I started researching. So I SERIOUSLY thank you in advance if you can lay this out for me in a way that makes sense..

    I need a theme for a website I am building about phlebotomy training (Phlebotomy a medical job, but this is irrelevant). I know that there are a bunch of different places that I can download themes themes, but I dont understand basic things about how the themes are built.

    I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO CODE, nor do I plan on learning or hiring a developer to customize my template for me. I need something that works out of the box that gives me many customization options. My main revenue source will be through Adsense.

    Question 1
    If I understand correctly, ALL themes are built on a framework (thesis, genesis, etc…). So when I browse a website, like ThemeForest, all the themes that I see are built on one of these frameworks. Right?

    Question 2
    I am a big fan of Pat Flynn’s website SmartPassiveIncome.com. On his website, he recommends using the thesis framework. When I go to diythemes.com (the website that sells the thesis framework, I see that it is a really bland theme framework. I see that there are skins available, but this does not exactly scream “customization”. But every web developer keeps talking about Thesis, Genesis, etc and I dont know what the big deal is or why anybody would use them.

    Is there anybody that can guide me in the right direction? And explain what exactly I am looking at when I go to websites like themeforest? Am I looking at Themes built on a specific framework, or just themes thrown together by a developer?

  • As you probably found, there are opinions all over the map about frameworks – and there really is no “right” answer – some people prefer using them, others don’t. But to answer a few of your questions –

    Q1 – no, not all themes are built on a framework – lots of them are not.

    We don’t have any info about themes on other sites (like ThemeForest), so you’d have to do your own research about those, but I would not assume they are all built on a framework.

    Q2 – Thesis and Genesis have been around for quite a while and have built a strong reputation for good themes and community and developer support. I’ve not used them, so can’t comment personally, but I know many people who are quite happy with them.

    A few other comments:
    You certainly don’t need to use a framework to have a really great WP site. Plenty of non-framework themes have lots of built-in options (meaning less code modifying for you).

    If you are brand new, I’d suggest starting out with a free theme from this site – at least until you get an idea of how WP works and what you really want (and don’t want).

    Another factor in picking a theme is what support is available – as it varies greatly. This site only offers support for themes downloaded from here – so if you get a theme from someplace else, make sure it’s well-supported. But even with the themes from here, some are really well supported by the developer (and other users), others aren’t. You can get a pretty good idea by looking at the support forum for a specific theme – on the theme’s own page, click on the support tab to get there.

    Hope that helps a little – I agree that all the info out there can be confusing :).

    First of all, you are the man! I have been hitting refresh every 20 minutes. This will guide me in the right direction for sure.

    Also, this was my first post. I was unaware of the bumping rules, but I read the link you provided and it makes sense.

    I am against the idea of using a free theme because I believe I believe “you get what you pay for” and I am trying to make a wise investment. I am leaning towards a Studiopress Genesis + Theme combination. From what I understand, I shouldnt have to do much coding unless I need to make major changes.

    You certainly won’t go wrong with Genesis.

    But ironically, it’s not always true that you get what you pay for when it comes to themes – there are plenty of really great free ones with amazing support. Of course, not all free themes fall into that category, but I would not rule them out on that basis. Unfortunately, there are also paid ones that turn out to be a huge problem for the user with no help from the developer. Bottom line is that you have to do your own research – which you’ve obviously been doing :)! And like I said, Genesis is a great choice – good luck with your new site!
