    Hi, so you want the link to point to an image but pop up HTML instead when a user actually clicks on it?

    no, i want the contents of the popup to be some custom html. what the user is going to click is going to be a picture.

    You can specify the image URL in the hyperlink parameter of the shortcode. For example:

    [wp_colorbox_media url="#inline_content" type="inline" hyperlink="https://example.com/images/thumb.jpg"]
