Alert Message Opens TXT File Instead of Display in Browser

With the previous version of this plugin when a logged out site visitor attempted to access a private file they were presented with a message within the browser window that stated they needed to login to access the file.
With the upgrade to the new version when a site visitor clicks to access a private file a TXT file is now opening with the message displayed.
I would like to not open a text file, but can’t figure out how to change it in the new version.
Can you advise on how to redirect the visitor to a message in the browser instead of opening a text file?
