Post the Security Log entry from your BPS Security log that shows what is being blocked in the Universal Post Manager plugin so I can create a whitelist rule and post it here. Also I will download and test the Universal Post Manager plugin.

nothing in the log regarding this plugin – i emptied the log, tested the plugin, re-checked the log

there are also no server error logs (that i can access anyway)

    anything else i can do?

I have tested the Universal Post Manager (very neat plugin). On a XAMPP Local server and a Go Daddy hosted website and all buttons and downloads work successfully without any problems for all file types: pdf, doc, html, text, xml and print.

On a HostGator test site with WP Super Cache installed the pdf download button/feature does not work – either the page hangs and does nothing or it crashes eventually or I see a blank white page – I assume that has something to do with the cached page or of course it could an intermittent server timeout thing. All other buttons and download types do work.

I suspect that on your site deactivating or disabling BPS was just a coincidental thing and not the root problem for pdf downloads. Or there is some other factor involved. If you are not seeing a 403 error either in your Browser or in the BPS Security Log file then the chances that the root cause is the BPS plugin is very unlikely. Could be something as simple as an intermittent timeout issue with your server itself.

Also worth noting: on the XAMPP and Go Daddy hosted test sites the BPS Speed Boost Cache code is being used as well.

Ok I was able to recreate this error:
FPDF error: Can't open image file: https://demo5.local/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/bps-pro-install-update-now-300x290.png

In order to generate the error an image file needs to be called from the /uploads folder. I will now try to see if I can figure out what the cause is and post back here.

Nope does not have anything to do with BPS. I completely removed BPS from a hosted test site and the same/similar error occurred when trying to do a pdf download: FPDF error: Can't open image file: https://forum.ait-pro.com/xxxxxxxxx/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/bps-pro-install-update-now-300x290.png

It looks like a bug in the Universal Post Manager plugin to me.
